THE RYAN PATRICK KISHBAUGH MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The Inaugural Event for the CCWS Foundation
The CCWS Foundation will host the first fund raising effort since its inception in January 2010. This 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which is currently based in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is dedicated to providing scholarships for athletes who have been diagnosed with chronic illnesses and hope to compete at the collegiate level. Why “CCWS?” The letters represent “Courage, Confidence, Wisdom and Strength;” virtues that are required of every athlete but especially poignant for those battling chronic illnesses.
The Foundation’s Founder and President, Nicole Overeem, decided to use the Ryan Patrick Kishbaugh Memorial Golf Tournament as the inaugural event because she was especially touched by Ryan’s story. Initially diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during the fall of his senior year at the Fayetteville Academy, Ryan Kishbaugh continued to excel academically and athletically. He was accepted to Princeton University. Following complications from bone marrow transplantation, Ryan died in January 2003. Ryan’s father, Dr. David Kishbaugh, soccer coach, Mr. Andrew McCarthy, and his close friend from the Fayetteville Academy, Ms. Catherine Ward, all serve on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “This tournament has really become a community event that commemorates Ryan’s life,” said Dr. Kishbaugh.
This year’s golf tournament, formerly known as the RPK Golf Invitational, will be held at Cypress Lakes Golf Course on July 24th, two days before Ryan’s 25th birthday. Individual players and teams have embraced this event. Corporate sponsorships have been donated by the RPK Center, Carpe Diem, Valley Regional Imaging, Cross Creek Imaging, Family Foods. The Fayetteville Academy is sponsoring the hole-in-one prize, which is a cash prize of $40, 000 or four years tuition at the Fayetteville Academy. Local businesses continue to donate raffle items. Of course, additional sponsors can enlist and donations can be made directly to the foundation through their website, www.ccwsfoundation.org.
Proceeds from the golf tournament will directly benefit the CCWS Foundation’s scholarship fund and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
